    STATE BUDGET UPDATE

On July 1, Governor Brewer vetoed a large portion of the FY 2010 budget and requested the Legislature continue to work with her on a consensus solution to balance the state budget that neither over-spends nor under-funds. As the Legislature begins work in a special session we wanted to take this opportunity to update you on the status of the Department of Housing and the Housing Trust Fund. One of the budget reconciliation bills contained changes to the formula by which the Housing Trust Fund is funded.

The legislation would have ensured that the Department receives $10.5 million annually from Unclaimed Property revenues, a positive change considering earlier proposals to permanently defund the Housing Trust Fund. While the Governor supported continued funding for the Housing Trust Fund, other budget concerns led to a veto of the bill containing this provision last week.

The status of the HTF remains unknown and will likely be included in any new budget legislation considered by the Legislature. We will continue to update you as information becomes available.
